Medicine For The Sake Of Vanity

Medicine is not just for saving lives anymore. Medicine has furthered its scope to save egos, self-confidence, relationships and marriages as believed by many patronizes of cosmetic medicine.          We cannot really say whether or not cosmetic medicine is a bane or a boon. According to testimonies of those who have benefited from the wonders of cosmetic surgery in various forms, indeed, their lives changed overnight because of cosmetic procedures done on them.

Perhaps in a way, cosmetic surgery may have helped a lot of people in terms of boosting their egos. When a person in a depressed state suddenly starts looking at a better self after undergoing some breast enhancements or wrinkle smoothing treatments – yes, we can say that indirectly, cosmetic medicine has helped “save” the lives of these people.

And yet – how far should a person go to seek enhancements and alterations on his or her body? And how about the danger of being addicted to cosmetic procedures, which has been found to be as dangerous as substance addiction? And is not a boosting people’s self-confidence and personal perception of oneself by means of cosmetic surgery a way of tolerating people’s wish to escape from reality that aging is irreversible and that no matter how many times a person undergoes facelifts and other youth and beauty enhancements – aging cannot, and never will be reversed?

Vanity should have limits and no less than those in the medical profession should enlighten their patients that medicine should be devoted mainly on saving lives and not pampering the vanity of people. If no one is willing to perform cosmetic surgery, the quest for endless youth and beauty will end where it should. But unfortunately, many of our medical practitioners prefer to put their scalpel where the money is.
