Breast augmentation – breast enlargement, mammoplasty enlargement, augmentation mammoplasty – has become the most popular cosmetic surgery in America. Women pursue breast augmentation mostly for cosmetic reasons and breast reconstruction. The two kinds of breast implants on the market today are saline and silicone gel. Saline implants are filled with salt water and are made of a silicone elastomer. Saline breast implants were created in 1964 with the goal of smaller surgical incisions, as the implant is inflated after it has been placed. Though silicone implants were developed in 1961, the have gone through many changes, bringing it to the current “fifth generation” of silicone implants. These implants have shown significant safety improvements, particularly in the semi-solid gel that prevents the silicone in the breast from migrating.
The surgical procedure for breast augmentation takes approximately two hours. Each procedure varies on incision type, implant material and implant pocket placement. Incisions can be placed below the breast, along the areolar border, in the armpit, the navel or the abdomen. Each incision is a different approach to placement and for different reasons. The different surgical procedures yield different types of scars and results. It is important to consult your doctor to decide which incision is right for you.
The physical results of breast augmentation are immediately visible. But there are post-surgical complications that all patients should be aware of. Breast augmentation surgery, like every surgery, carries significant risk. Post-surgical complications include adverse reactions to anesthesia, post-operative bleeding or fluid collection, site infection, breast pain or alterations in sensation and thinning of the breast tissue, as well as potential visible scarring. Breast implants are also never permanent. While they may last for decades, they all break down eventually and must be replaced.
